Founded in 2006, Archer began with a simple but forward-focused belief: Higher education was still at the beginning of the internet era, and students needed a clearer way to explore their options. At the time, digital discovery was transforming industries from real estate to travel, but higher education remained difficult for many students to explore. Archer’s founding vision was to make the search for education more accessible, transparent, and student-centered.
Two decades later, the mission is the same, even as the work has evolved.
What began as a consumer-facing web portal has grown into a full-service Online Growth Enablement partner for colleges and universities. Today, Archer works alongside institutions to strengthen enrollment marketing, expand online programs, improve student engagement, and build the internal capabilities needed for sustainable growth.
Over the past 20 years, Archer has partnered with more than 200 institutions, supported more than 1,000 online programs, and helped institutions reach more than 20 million adult learners.
“Higher education has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. From the rise of online learning to the growing role of AI, how adult learners discover online programs is constantly evolving,” said Brian Hartnack, cofounder and CEO of Archer Education. “Our focus has always been enabling institutions to adapt while staying true to their mission and academic strengths.”
From Digital Discovery to Online Growth Enablement
Archer’s story reflects the larger story of higher education’s digital transformation.
In 2006, the internet was still reshaping how students researched schools, compared programs, and made decisions. Search engines, online directories, and digital advertising were quickly becoming essential tools to reach prospective students. As online learning grew, institutions needed new ways to stand out, show value, and meet learners where they were.
Archer helped institutions navigate that shift by bringing digital marketing, enrollment strategy, and data-driven decisions into sharper focus, specifically for online programs.
Today, the challenges are different, but the need for adaptation is still important. Online programs are no longer a niche offering — they’re table stakes. Adult learners expect flexible options, clear information, personalized communication, and a seamless digital experience. At the same time, institutions are balancing enrollment pressures, changing student behaviors, new competition, and emerging technologies that are reshaping how prospective students discover and evaluate programs.
That is where Archer’s work has continued to evolve.
Rather than just driving leads, Archer partners with institutions to build stronger systems for growth. That includes aligning marketing and enrollment strategies, improving the student experience, strengthening data infrastructure, supporting online program growth, and helping university teams develop the capabilities to sustain momentum over time.
For our CEO, the past 20 years have been both a professional and personal milestone.
“This has been one of the great adventures of my life,” Hartnack said. “I still get to work with the close friends and cofounders I started this journey with decades ago, and I’ve never found the work boring. This industry and the way students discover programs continue to evolve.”
Supporting Institutions Through the Next Era of Higher Ed
As Archer looks ahead, one of the most significant changes facing higher education is the rise of artificial intelligence (AI).
AI is already influencing how prospective students search for information, compare programs, and form impressions of institutions. Traditional search is no longer the only path to discovery. Students are increasingly encountering AI-generated answers, recommendations, summaries, and content that shape how they understand their options.
“AI will play an increasingly important role in enrollment strategy, though success still depends on strong data infrastructure and authentic storytelling,” Hartnack said. “The institutions that thrive will be those that combine technology with human insight, a strong student experience, and a great brand story.”
In response to this, Archer launched its AI-Ready Organic Strategy (AIROS) offering, a five-pillar system that brings together technical search engine optimization (SEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), faculty thought leadership, earned media, content strategy, and organic social to bring online programs up to the surface when students conduct research in traditional search engines or on AI platforms.
On the enrollment front, Archer built an AI-enabled admissions tool directly into the enrollment management function. The AI-powered chatbot, nurturing campaigns, and student briefs help prospective students get answers faster, keep conversations consistent, and free up advisors to focus on high-value conversations.
